The Wang 700 machines are completely microcode driven and a single bit ROM error in a critical path will render the machine dead with no display or keyboard response. In a rarely-used path microcode error(s) may render a rarely used function unusable or cause rare crashes/lockups.

The ROM Emulator has been designed to replace defective microcode ROM and to extend the ROM to provide alternative ROM images and diagnostic routines. See wirerom in the Wang section for further information about the design and use of the emulator.

Microcode Images for 700 series

DoPECC seeks to collect and maintain a library of microcode ROM images for 700 series machines. There are known to be a number of versions of individual model microcodes and it would be good to develop the most comprehensive collection.

The current collection is listed below. The files are in binary format that can be loaded into the ROM Emulator or Douglas Miller's Wang 700 Simulator (opens in new tab) .

Obtaining a ROM Emulator

ROM Emulators are available from DoPECC in a number of forms:
