Wang 600-14TP #CC3580
Wang 600
This Wang 600 was the third acquired by DoPECC. The chassis is dated March 1973, keyboard February 1973 and ROM January 1973, making it a relatively early machine. It is fully featured with maximum RAM expansion (4k!), printer and tape. The RAM uses Mostek MK4008 1k x 1 DRAM chips, as was used in the early 600 machines.
The microcode ROM is wire-braid and has various stickers that have not been seen on other ROMs. A production sticker is dated 26 January 1973 and states a Model number of 600-B5-6 with “Range 64/120/81”. It’s not known what Range refers to. There is a note to say it’s a 4k ROM, RAM size is hard-coded in ROM and ROMs must be matched with their specific RAM size.
The chassis is stamped to designate 240v 50Hz operation and it’s interesting to see that the ROM has a sticker to show that is was tested and OK on 28 December 1973 and 18 February 1974 - both of these dates are in DD/MM/YY format, unlike the MM/DD/YY format used on the production sticker and other factory date stamps. This suggests that the ROM was tested after overseas delivery but the Wang Service Tag sticker inside the case is blank, with no record of any service events, so it’s unknown why the ROM may have been tested.

The machine looks rather different to the others on this site, the previous owner had used the “RetroBrite” procedure to reverse the brown discoloration that commonly occurs with old plastic cases. The effect was pretty powerful and it’s interesting to see the machine looking more like it must have when in actual use.
